Camping myths - what's true?
Camper jokes, funny sayings, a bit of spot - have you ever noticed that camping and motorhome holidays are subject to some stubborn prejudices? From unreasonably expensive to stuffy and stingy, everything is included. But what's really wrong with the image of camping holidays between kitschy garden gnomes , rickety camping chairs, unhygienic campsites and boring neighbors ?
As passionate campers, we got to the bottom of these myths and compiled the most absurd ones for you. You're allowed to smile - but you're also allowed to think, because sometimes there's a spark of truth in them.
Myth 1: Traveling in an RV is expensive.
A motorhome like this can be an expensive investment - that's absolutely true. Converting an old van can (!) - but doesn't have to - be quite expensive. When you consider the many years in which you can go on very cheap vacations in your rolling home, the purchase costs are put into perspective. You save on flight costs, hotel rooms, rental cars and expensive restaurants if you want. Free or very cheap parking spaces also play well into our hands here.
Myth 2: RV travel is unsafe.
That depends primarily on your driving style :) Safety when traveling in a motorhome is usually high. Modern RVs are equipped with numerous safety features , and the driving itself is no more stressful than with one a car. Of course, we should know the applicable traffic regulations before setting off and ensure that our motorhome is in good condition . Myth 3: The best time for a motorhome vacation is summer.
Summer is great for camping - of course! And at the same time, there are many advantages to taking the motorhome out of the garage outside of high season . The low season offers more pleasant temperatures, less crowded campsites and a quieter atmosphere. Myth 4: RV travel is only for experienced campers.
Everyone started small - including camping. Maybe things won't go smoothly the first time, but that's just part of the camping adventure . As everywhere else, practice and routine make perfect! So go ahead, have faith! Many RV rental companies offer comprehensive instruction , and modern RVs are often user-friendly and easy to operate. If you're new to camping and still unsure, start with short trips in your area and then slowly work your way up to longer trips.
Myth 5: Camping is stuffy.
Darling, get out the garden gnomes! The idea that camping is stuffy is certainly justified : There are people who like to celebrate their stay in nature in a very traditional way with a fence, plastic flower decorations and even their own washing machine - for them this is the epitome of a successful camping trip. That Not everyone likes it - especially not those who travel spontaneously and simply want to enjoy their freedom on a road trip. Here, minimalist purism prevails - simply because every item you carry takes up a lot of space and capacity. So it's purely a matter of type : camping offers space for individuality and Variety. It can be a paradise for philistines , an adventure for outdoor enthusiasts , a family experience or a cheap alternative for globetrotters . Ultimately, all that matters is that you feel free and can design the camping experience according to your own ideas.
Myth 6: Camping is uncomfortable.
"How you lie in bed is how you lie." says an old saying. And that especially applies to camping. Many mattress manufacturers now offer great quality custom RV mattresses . This investment is absolutely worth it! Inconvenient is also a matter of interpretation: own toilet on board? Comfortable. Drain? Uncomfortable for some. Then it's better to use public infrastructure . High-quality, durable equipment with multiple functions makes life easy for campers. If you can organize yourself well and put the equipment back in its intended place after use, a motorhome holiday is ideal for you, it's super nice and also very comfortable .
Myth 7: Camping is unhygienic.
Spoiler: there is no room service here. You have to take care of your own motorhome yourself - it can therefore take on anything from clinically clean to unhygienic. Advantage: your bed in the camper is and remains your bed - so you always know who slept in it, which is not the case in any hotel room. When it comes to cleanliness , personal responsibility is required, especially when it comes to the keyword “camping toilet”. Public toilets and sanitary rooms on campsites are usually very well maintained - it is best to leave them as you would like to find them.
Myth 8: Insects. Everywhere.
There are a lot of insects, especially in warm areas - this is particularly noticeable when camping outside in nature. Next to lakes or moors, in the forest or swamp, insects will almost certainly bother you. After all, you wanted to go into nature! ;) But there are solutions here too: fly screens, mosquito nets, insect sprays and other products can quickly help.
